As for Obama, I believe he had a major political crash and burn. It started with that speech at West Point. I think that may have damaged Obama's pResidency more than any single event. It was an opportunity to gain so much lost ground with moderates and big Military supporters, instead that ramblimg mess of a speech made everyone who watched it mad. His support has dropped in a big way. Add the missed opportunities to the loss of support and I think that is a far bigger loss that most people think.
To make matters worse, Climategate has destroyed the #1 issue in the Obama agenda. Obamacare's chances drop with each day closer we get to midterm elections. I think the Dems will act like they want to pass healthcare, but how many Senators up for reelection want to go home and face the voters who are worried about jobs and inflation when all the dems did since 08(really 06) is spend $11 trillion and helped the greedy wall st. traders, hedge funds and big corporations, and a lobbyist here or there?
To pass healthcare would likely require using the "nuclear option" which Dems know would galvanize the currently fractured opposition groups nearing a midterm election. We'll see if they are that dumb.
